On this day in 1999 Steven Gerrard scored his first goal for Liverpool.

In a Premier League clash against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield a fresh faced Gerrard was fielded by Gerard Houllier as captain Jamie Redknapp was injured. The match didn’t get off to the greatest of starts for the home side as Wednesday found themselves ahead after just over a quarter of an hour, however Liverpool were quick to respond as Finnish defender Sami Hyypia pulled the score level minutes later. Danny Murphy gave the Reds a 2-1 lead going into half time.

Going into the second half few could have predicted it would be 19-year-old Steven Gerrard who would steal the headlines with a sensational first goal for Liverpool. On the 69th minute, Gerrard received the ball just beyond the halfway line, making a surging run forward he breezed past the Owl’s defence before slotting home in the bottom-left corner. David Thompson would cap off the comfortable 4-1 win, but it would be the number 28, Steven Gerrard, who would take all the plaudits.
