On this day in 2004 Liverpool kept their Champions League dream alive against Olympiakos.

Going into the final Champions League group stage match the Reds needed to beat Greek side Olympiakos by two goals in order to progress to the last 16 of the competition. After a disastrous first half, Liverpool found themselves 1-0 down thanks to a goal from Brazilian striker Rivaldo. Benitez’s side now required 3 goals in the second half if they had any hope of qualification.

The comeback began in the 47th minute when Florent Sinima Pongolle netted in front of the Kop. From there Liverpool dominated but it wasn’t until the 80th minute they would get a second thanks to an alert Neil Mellor turning in the rebound from a saved shot. Then in the 87th minute captain Steven Gerrard netted one of the goals of his career, smashing home a venomous half-volley from 25 yards to seal a 3-1 victory and secure Liverpool’s qualification on a famous, emotional European night at Anfield.
