On this day in 2001, Nicholas Anelka made his debut for Liverpool after joining on short term loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain. The French International joined LFC and helped with Liverpool’s late push to finish 2nd in the Premier League Table. Gerard Houllier (manager at the time) opted not to make the signing permanent as he settled for El Hadj Diouf instead.

Boxing Day always consists of fixtures for the Reds so we decided to pick our highlights from the past. A standout result when looking back is the 0-5 win over West Bromwich Albion in 2004 with goals from John Arne Riise (2), Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Steven Gerrard and Luis Garcia bringing all 3 points to Anfield. Another day that football fans look back to in delight is Boxing Day of 1963 where over 60 goals were scored in 10 games in the Premier League. Liverpool’s game had 7 of those with a 6-1 win over Stoke City at Anfield.
