On this day in 2008 Liverpool put 5 past Newcastle at St James’ Park

Going into the match Liverpool only needed a draw to go ahead of Chelsea in the league table. Benitez fielded a strong side as the Reds looked to come away from Newcastle with all three points. Things got off to a good start for the Reds with Gerrard and Hyypia netting 5 minutes apart in the first half to give the visitors a comfortable lead, however just before the break the Magpies managed to pull one back through David Edgar, ending the half with only one goal separating the sides.

The second half was significantly more one sided however as Liverpool rushed back into a commanding lead just 10 minutes into the second half with Ryan Babel and Gerrard both scoring, putting Liverpool 4-1 up and the game beyond Newcastle’s reach. Further adding to Newcastle’s agony, Xabi Alonso netted from the penalty spot to give Liverpool their fifth of the day and seal a commanding 5-1 win away from home.
