On this day in 2014 the Reds overcame Brendan Rodgers’ old club, Swansea, 4-1 at Anfield.

In a mid-table clash before new-years, Liverpool hosted Swansea, who found themselves 3 points ahead of Rodgers’ men in 8th after 18 games played. Should Liverpool pick up a win against the Welsh side they would move ahead of them on goal difference in the League. The match started routinely enough for the hosts with Alberto Moreno making it 1-0 from close-range just after the half hour mark.

Minutes after the second half kicked off £25 million man Adam Lallana doubled Liverpool’s lead after Lukasz Fabianski’s kicked deflected off him, looping into the net. Not a minute later, however, Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled one back for the Swans as he latched onto a flick from Coutinho, beat two men and finished in cool fashion. Liverpool soon restored their two goal lead with Lallana grabbing his second of the match just beyond the hour mark. Liverpool would net four times in the league for the first time in the 2014/15 season after former-Red Jonjo Shelvey turned a Jordan Henderson corner into his own net.

The game finished 4-1, putting the previous season’s runners up within 5 points of the top four, as they finished 2014 with back-to-back wins.
