On this day in 1997 Liverpool played out a 3-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield.
The match opened quite meekly for both sides, despite Liverpool boss Roy Evans fielding a strong side featuring the likes of Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore and Jamie Redknapp, as well as handing a full debut to Bjørn Tore Kvarme after signing the Norwegian defender on a Bosman. It wasn’t until the second half that the deadlock was broken. Auxiliary midfielder, Jamie Carragher got Liverpool off the mark, scoring his first ever goal for the Reds via a powerful, low header to beat the Villa keeper. Collymore and Fowler added to the scoring soon after Carra’s header to give the hosts a comfortable 3-0 win.
The win over the Villains took Evans’ Reds to the top of the Premier League, although fellow title contenders Manchester United and Arsenal were close behind with one and two games in hand respectively.
