On this day in 2007 Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield.

As rivals Liverpool and Chelsea looked to chase down Manchester United in the chase for the league title, third hosted second place in a Premier League clash. Dutch hitman Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring inside 5 minutes, latching onto a ball flicked on by Peter Crouch, rounding the Blues defence and finishing from just inside the box. Jermaine Pennant doubled the lead not long after with his first goal for Liverpool, intercepting a weak clearance from the Chelsea defence and firing home an excellent half-volley. Liverpool looked very much the team in control on the day, though were unable to score again, settling for a satisfying 2-0 win as Rafa Benitez bested Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea once again.
