On this day in 2001 Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 5-0 in the League Cup semi-final second leg.

Going into the second leg of the tie Liverpool were losing 2-1 on aggregate after a shock defeat at Selhurst Park. A goal from Vladimir Smicer not being enough to salvage a result for the Reds a fortnight before the return leg. But Anfield is always a tough place to get a result for the visitors and on this night it was no different. Liverpool opener extremely brightly, finding themselves 3-0 up inside 20 minutes thanks to Danny Murphy, Robbie Fowler and Igor Biscan as the Croatian midfielder netted his first goal for the Reds.

Into the second half and Gerard Houllier’s men continued to assert their dominance in a masterful performance. Biscan made it 4-0 on the night, putting Liverpool comfortably out of reach of Alan Smith’s Palace side just 5 minutes after the restart. Fowler also claimed a brace that night, netting just before the full 90 minutes came to an end, giving Liverpool a well-earned 6-2 aggregate victory and setting up a final match at Wembley between either Ipswich Town or Birmingham City.
