On this day in 2013 Liverpool signed the little magician, Philippe Coutinho.
Joining Liverpool from Inter Milan for a meagre fee of £8 million, Coutinho signed for the Reds at just 20-years-old, the young Brazilian was highly touted as a promising talent, once dubbed the ‘future of Inter’. However after spending five years with the Italian club and struggling to establish himself as a first team player, he spent a year on loan with Liga BBVA side Espanyol before moving to Merseyside on a permanent basis.
It didn’t take long for Coutinho to make an impact at Anfield, scoring three goals in the remainder of the 2012/13 campaign. The young Brazilian played a crucial role in Liverpool’s title challenge of 2013/14, providing a creative outlet from midfield and allowing the free scoring SAS duo of Suarez and Sturridge to run riot against the opposition.Under Jürgen Klopp, Coutinho has developed into a world class player, arguably one of the best in his position in the world. With that there inevitably comes a great deal of attention from other clubs with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG all expressing interest in the little magician. Fortunately, Coutinho has made clear that he wants to continue playing for and living in Liverpool.
As a midfielder who has scored 35 goals from 162 appearances in Liverpool red, Coutinho is a firm fan-favourite and many will be hoping that the 24-year-old Samba-man will go on to win many trophies here at Anfield.
