On this day in 2011 Liverpool signed Uruguay striker Luis Suarez.

Joining from Ajax for £22.8 million alongside Andy Carroll from Newcastle United for £35 million, Suarez came to Liverpool as a replacement for Fernando Torres who was going out the Anfield exit door to league rivals Chelsea.

Although his time at Liverpool was marred by controversy in the form of physical and racial abuse of opposition players, Suarez established himself as a world class striker during his time at Anfield, scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances, almost helping Liverpool to their first league title since 1990. In the end Suarez traded Merseyside for Catalonia, moving to Barcelona in July 2014 for a fee of £75 million.
