On this day in 2009 Liverpool beat rivals Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield.
In the mid-season matchup between the two sides, both teams were tied in 2nd in the league on 48 points, Chelsea leading the Reds on goal difference alone. Whoever won the contest at Anfield would move within two points of league leaders Manchester United, making the match a must-win for both teams.
The match opened quite tamely and it wasn’t until the second half that the first bit of drama would occur, that being Frank Lampard being shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Xabi Alonso close to the hour mark. Liverpool made their extra man on the pitch count, dominating Chelsea throughout the match, although it wouldn’t be until the 89th minute that a breakthrough was made. Spanish hitman Fernando Torres met a Fabio Aurelio cross with his head, beating Petr Cech at his near-post. Torres went on to bag another in stoppage time, finishing neatly after Yossi Benayoun pickpocketed Ashley Cole and played him through for his second of the day. Anfield was ecstatic after the final whistle, celebrating a satisfying 2-0 win over bitter rivals Chelsea, as they sustained their title challenge for the 2008/09 season.
