On this day in 1972 Liverpool great Steve McManaman was born.
Joining Liverpool at 14-years-old, McManaman rose through the ranks within Liverpool’s youth setup, signing his first professional contract with the Reds on 19th February 1990. It wouldn’t be until the 1991/92 season that McManaman would make his full debut under Graeme Souness, his impressive performances that season saw him become a regular first team player and from there he never looked back.
Throughout his 9 year long career at Anfield Macca made 364 appearances for the Reds, scoring 66 goals in that time, helping Liverpool to the FA Cup in 1992 and League Cup in 1995. In the summer of 1999 McManaman swapped Merseyside for Madrid where he would go on to win La Liga, the Supercopa de Espana and the Champions League two times a piece with Real Madrid. Eventually he moved back to the Premier League in 2003, playing for Manchester City until his retirement in 2005.
