On this day in 1985 Joe Fagan’s Reds beat Arsenal 3-0.
Having been postponed on the Saturday (09/02) the match between Liverpool and Arsenal was moved to a Tuesday night fixture, resulting in an attendance of just 28,600, a small number for such a big game at Anfield.
Ian Rush was the one who scored first against the Gunners, putting Liverpool 1-0 up 32 minutes in. A goal from the skipper Phil Neal doubled the host’s lead in the second half before Ronnie Whelan capped off the scoring, making it 3-0. Rush had a chance to grab his second earlier in the match but was denied from the penalty spot as Arsenal keeper John Lukic saved to his right to deny the Welshman. The win over Arsenal was a big one for Liverpool as they toiled around mid-table, that win taking them above Nottingham Forest and into 7th place, although they remained just one point off Arsenal who were sitting in 4th.
