On this day in 2015 Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-1 thanks to wonder goals from Henderson and Coutinho.

Going into the match against the reigning Premier League champions Liverpool had just suffered a shock exit in the first knockout round of the Europa League, losing 5-4 on penalties to Turkish side Beskitas in Istanbul after a 1-1 aggregate draw. Fortunately, Rodgers’ men found themselves in much better form for City’s visit to Anfield.

Jordan Henderson was appointed skipper for the day and led by example, putting Liverpool ahead with a wonderful, curling strike from 25 yards. City and Bosnia frontman Edin Dzeko equalised for the Citizens little over 10 minutes after Henderson’s opener but it wasn’t enough to keep the hosts down. In the second half it was Philippe Coutinho who stepped up to put his name in lights once again with another sensational striker, cutting in from the left side of the field to fire a spectacular shot beyond the reach of Joe Hart, giving Liverpool a much deserved 2-1 win.
