On this day in 2004 Liverpool beat Levski Sofia 4-2 in the second leg of the UEFA Cup third round.
After beating the Bulgarian side 2-0 at Anfield, Houllier’s men faced a trip to the Vassil Levski stadium to finish the tie and progress to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup. After a quick start for the Reds the tie was all but finished as quick-fire goals from Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard saw the visitors go 2-0 inside 10 minutes. Goals from Sofia players Georgi Ivanov and Sasa Simonovic saw the hosts pull level on the night but just before half time Didi Hamann restored Liverpool’s lead.
The second half saw Liverpool put the tie to bed with much comfort as Finnish defender Sami Hyypia celebrated his 250th Liverpool appearance with a goal, helping to see the Reds through 6-2 on aggregate having brushed Sofia aside both home and away.
