On this day in 1984 Liverpool beat Benfica 1-0 in the first leg of the European Cup 3rd round.
Coming up against Sven Goran Eriksson’s Benfica, Liverpool hosted the Portuguese side at Anfield for the first leg of the European Cup’s first knockout round. Joe Fagan fielded a star-studded side featuring the likes of Phil Neal, Alan Hansen, Ian Rush and captain Graeme Souness.
The match was decided in the second half with Welsh hitman Ian Rush scoring on 67 minutes, his headed goal seeing him net his 34th goal of the season. Throughout the rest of the game the Reds were able to shut out the visitors, seeing them take a 1-0 advantage to the second leg in Portugal.
