On this day in 2008 Liverpool beat Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle 3-0.
Just days before their trip to Italy to face Inter Milan in the Champions League, Rafa Benitez’s Reds faced a visit from Newcastle United, a side featuring former-Reds player Michael Owen. Benitez fielded a strong side with the likes of Carragher, Gerrard, Alonso and Torres starting, in spite of their European fixture in the coming days. Fortunately Rafa’s team selection paid dividends when two goals in quick succession late in the first half saw Liverpool go ahead.
Jermain Pennant was the first to get his name on the scoresheet before Steven Gerrard linked up with Fernando Torres to see El Niño net a spectacularly worked team goal. It would be Steven Gerrard who scored next for Liverpool in the second half, turning from goal provider to goal scorer to hand the Reds a well deserved 3-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield.
