On this day across the years Liverpool have had a number of memorable wins with victories over Manchester United, Real Madrid and Newcastle United.
2016 – This time last year Liverpool faced their fiercest rivals, Manchester United for the first time ever in European competition as both sides looked to qualify for the quarter finals of the Europa League. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring from a penalty in the first half before a rampant Roberto Firmino doubled the scoring in the second half, seeing Jürgen Klopp’s men come out victorious over Louis van Gaal’s United, 2-0.
2009 – Five-time champions against nine-time champions, Liverpool hosted Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 following the Reds 1-0 win at the Bernabeu in the first leg. This time it was a far more one-sides affair as Liverpool ran away with it at Anfield. Fernando Torres scored first followed by a brace from captain Stevie G. Italian defender Andrea Dossena completed the rout late on, scoring a surprise goal to make it 4-0 on the night to Rafa Benitez’s Redmen.
1997 – After what was widely regarded as one of the best Premier League matches of all time, Roy Evans’ Liverpool faced off against Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle once again after their last meeting at Anfield ended 4-3. It was a massively one-sided affair to start with as Liverpool went in at the break 3-0 up thanks to goals from Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger and Robbie Fowler. But in the second period the visitors fought back, bringing to scores to 3-3 by the 88th minute. Once again it was last-minute heartbreak for Newcastle as Robbie Fowler netted the winner on the stroke of full time, seeing the Magpies leave Merseyside empty handed once again.
