On this day in 2016 Liverpool progressed to the quarter finals of the Europa League after drawing 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Following the 2-0 win in the first leg Liverpool were looking to be a shoo-in to qualify for the last eight of the Europa League, only a trip to face Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United stood in their way.
France starlet Anthony Martial gave the hosts the advantage of the night, converting from the spot little over half an hour into the first half to give United a 1-0 lead. However moments before the conclusion of the first half, Brazilian magician, Philippe Coutinho produced a moment of magic effectively killing the tie off, chipping De Gea from an improbable angle at the near post to gift Liverpool the all-important away goal. The match ended in a stalemate at 1-1, although Jürgen Klopp’s Reds progressed thanks to a 3-1 aggregate win.
