On this day in 2006 Liverpool thrashed Birmingham City 7-0 in the FA Cup quarter final.

After a hard fought campaign thus far a trip to face Steve Bruce’s Birmingham was all that stood between Liverpool and the semi-finals of the FA Cup. On the night Rafa Benitez fielded a close to full strength side with the hopes of brushing aside their opponents.

A first minute goal from Sami Hyypia set the tone for the evening as the Reds started as they meant to go on. A first half double from the big frontman Peter Crouch saw the visitors go into the break with a 3-0 lead. Fernando Morientes made it four on the hour mark before John Arne Riise let rip with the goal of the night, hammering a long range effort into the top corner. An own-goal from Olivier Tebily compounded Birmingham’s agony before French striker Djibril Cisse made it 7-0 on the stroke of full time, seeing Liverpool progress to the next round of the FA Cup against a dejected Birmingham side.
