On this day in 2016 Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Traveling to the Westfalendstadion for the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals Jürgen Klopp was faced with the prospect of beating his former side to the semi-finals of the coveted European competition.
Arguably the favourites to win the tournament Thomas Tuchel’s Dortmund side were favourites to triumph in the first leg of the tie. However, Liverpool struck firs, going 1-0 ahead on 36 minutes thanks to young Belgian striker Divock Origi. The Reds entered the break ahead, though their lead didn’t survive for long through the second half as Mats Hummels equalised for Dortmund on 48 minutes. The German defender’s goal for the hosts proved to be the last of the match seeing the game end 1-1, Liverpool taking a slender advantage into the return leg at Anfield in the form of an away goal.
