On this day in 2011 Jon Flanagan made his Liverpool debut in a 3-0 win over Manchester City.

Going into the tail end of the 2010/11 season a top 4 finish for Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool was looking increasingly unlikely following a shambolic start to the season under Roy Hodgson. Although a clash against Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City side at Anfield was an ideal opportunity to try an make up some ground on the team occupying fourth place. The team fielded by Dalglish was a strong one relative to the quality at the Scotsman’s disposal, however there was one surprise name on the team sheet as Jon Flanagan was given his first appearance for Liverpool.

The Reds started strong with record signing Andy Carroll scoring his first ever goal for the club 13 minutes into the match, three months after joining for £35 million on the January transfer window deadline day. Deadly Dutchman, Dirk Kuyt added Liverpool’s second of the match and Carroll struck his second of the match quickly after making it 3-0 to the hosts. After an electric first half there were no more goals to be had throughout the rest of the match, leaving the Anfield faithful satisfied with a convincing 3-0 win over top four opposition.
