On this day in 1976 Liverpool’s former Irish full back Steve Finnan was born.

Signing for the Reds from Fulham for £3.5 million in August 2003. Despite struggling in his maiden season at Anfield under Gerard Houllier, Finnan thrived under Rafa Benitez in the 2004/05 campaign, establishing himself as Liverpool’s first choice right back.

The Irish defender played a crucial part in Liverpool’s Champions League winning campaign in 2004/05 and their FA Cup winning campaign in 2005/06. Throughout the course of his 5-year Liverpool career the Irish defender made a total of 217 appearances and despite scoring just one goal Finnan is still remembered as one of Liverpool’s best full backs of the Premier League era.
