On this day in 2010 Liverpool were knocked out of the Europa League at the semi-final stage, despite beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield.
Following a 1-0 loss in Spain against Atletico in the first leg, Rafa Benitez’s men needed to win the second leg by at least two goals if they weren’t able to keep a clean. Things started well for Liverpool with Alberto Aquilani putting the hosts 1-0 up just before half time.
The second half saw no more goals scored and so the tie was taken to extra time. The Reds were given an exceptional boost in the first half of extra time as Yossi Benayoun made it 2-0, meaning all Liverpool had to do was maintain their clean sheet in order to qualify for the final. Just before the break in extra time however Atletico dealt a massive blow to Merseyside as former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan pulled one back for the Spanish outfit. Sadly there wasn’t any more goal in the match and Atletico Madrid qualified for the final on the away goals rule after the tie ended 2-2.
