On this day in 2007 Liverpool progressed to the Champions League final in Athens following their triumph over Chelsea.
After the first leg of the tie Liverpool were trailing 1-0 on aggregate, seeing their rivals from the capital, Chelsea, come into the match with a clear advantage. To the credit of Rafa Benitez’s men they remained cool under pressure and it wasn’t long until the tie was put back in the balance with Daniel Agger firing home after being teed up by a Steven Gerrard free-kick.
After the second half, and the consequential extra time had passed, the tie still remained level at 1-1 seeing the match taken to penalties at the Anfield Road end. Boudewijn ‘Bolo’ Zenden, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt all converted their penalties while Frank Lampard was the only Chelsea player to score with Pepe Reina saving in the other three instances to see Liverpool progress to a second Champions League final in three years having beaten Chelsea 4-1 on penalties.
