On this day in 1984 Liverpool beat Coventry City 5-0.
Going into the match at Anfield against Coventry Joe Fagan’s Reds looked to take one step closer to the league title, with the prospect of a win taking them within touching distance of the trophy. With Liverpool leading the league by two points with a game in hand on second placed Manchester United as visit from the leagues 19th placed team promised to be a simple affair for the Reds.
And simple it was with Ian Rush netting twice late on in the first half to stand Liverpool in good stead to claim yet another win. In the second half a penalty allowed the Welsh striker to complete his hat-trick before going on to grab a fourth, a further goal from Alan Hansen saw Liverpool run out 5-0 winners, seeing them go within two points of claiming the league title.
