On this day in 2012 Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1.

Just three days after losing the FA Cup final to the London side Liverpool decided that they’d leave it until there was nothing to play for to turn it on against Roberto di Matteo’s Chelsea side. Jordan Henderson, Daniel Agger and Jonjo Shelvey were all on the scoresheet for the Reds with a Michael Essien own goal making it 4 to the hosts. A second half goal from Ramires saw Chelsea pull one back though it wasn’t enough as Kenny Dalglish’s Reds ended the match at 4-1 victors. Also on this day in 1963 Tommy Smith made his Liverpool debut in a victory over Birmingham City. The defender was given his debut by Bill Shankly against an ailing Birmingham side, placed 20th out of 22 in the division. Liverpool ran out comfortable winners on the day, Gordon Wallace gave Shankly’s men a 1-0 lead in the first half before Ian St John, Ian Callaghan and a Roger Hunt double saw Liverpool through to a 5-1 win.
