FA Cup glory awaited Liverpool on this day against Arsenal in 2001. A 0-0 looked on the cards and, ultimately, penalties but Liverpool walked out of the Millenium Stadium FA Cup winners after a 2-1 victory. Arsenal took the lead through Freddie Ljumberg but 2 very late goals from Michael Owen gave Liverpool the victory and the trophy.
This day, in 2002, saw the contract expiration of Nicholas Anelka. The Frenchman had already made high profiled moves to Real Madrid (£23mil) and Paris St Germain (£20mil) before making his temporary move to Anfield. The prolofic Frenchman had obvious talent but only mustered 4 goals in 20 games and was looking forward to joining the Reds on a permanent move. Gerard Houllier, manager of Liverpool at the time, decided against this move and signed El Hadj Diouf instead.
