On this day in 2015 Steven Gerrard played his last ever competitive match for Liverpool.

The tail end of the 2014/15 campaign was certainly one to forget for Liverpool fans with a string of disappointing performances seeing the Reds drop back out of the Champions League qualification spots. More importantly though it was the end of an era at Liverpool as club captain Steven Gerrard was set to be released by the club at the close of the Premier League season. The less said about the skipper’s last match for the Reds the better, Brendan Rodgers’ side were battered 6-1 by Stoke City, the only consolation for the Reds being Gerrard scoring on his final outing as a Liverpool player. Also on this day Champions League winner Vladimir Smicer was born. Transferred to the club on his birthday in 1999 Vladi was a cult hero at Liverpool, playing a part of the treble winning side of 2001 and, most notably, netting Liverpool’s second goal in the 3-3 comeback against AC Milan.
